Abstract

Soils in arid and semi-arid regions often have low organic matter and high calcium carbonate, limiting fertility and crop productivity. In Central Anatolia, Türkiye, these constraints challenge sustainable agriculture. Biochar and humic substances are increasingly used as soil amendments to improve soil properties and nutrient availability. This study evaluated the effects of barnyard manure, poultry manure, their derived biochars, and humic acid on dwarf bean growth and nutrient uptake in a calcareous soil from Central Anatolia under greenhouse conditions. A completely randomized design with four replications was employed. Manures and their derived biochars were applied at 0.5, 1, and 3% (w/w), whereas humic acid was applied at 150, 300, and 600 mg kg⁻¹. Plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, and macronutrrient and micronutrient uptake were measured. Amendment type and application rate significantly affected plant growth (p < 0.01). Poultry manure-derived biochar applied at 3% produced the most pronounced effects, increasing fresh weight by 233.3%, phosphorus uptake by 100%, and potassium uptake by 93.8%. Macronutrient uptake, except that of nitrogen, responded to the treatments, whereas micronutrient uptake showed more pronounced changes following both biochar and humic acid applications. Overall, manure-derived biochars generally performed as well as or better than humic acid, depending on the application rate. These results indicate that manure-derived biochar and humic acid can enhance plant growth and nutrient uptake in calcareous soils deficient in organic matter. Thus, organic amendments offer effective strategies for improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable crop production in semi-arid agroecosystems.
