Abstract

Calcareous sodic soils are difficult to reclaim because amendment responses depend on exchangeable sodium and carbonate buffering. This study evaluated the effects of chemical amendments and leaching on soil properties, inorganic phosphorus (P) fractions, and wheat productivity. Three sodic soils containing 5.2%, 13.3%, and 25.1% CaCO₃ were treated with gypsum, CaCO₃, H₂SO₄, or CaCO₃ + H₂SO₄ at nominal levels corresponding to 50%, 100%, and 150% of the gypsum requirement (GR); the combined-treatment input was divided equally between CaCO₃ and H₂SO₄. After 21 d of incubation, the soils were leached with 1.5 pore volumes of deionized water and used to grow wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Pandas) to physiological maturity. Amendment effectiveness varied with treatment level and soil. Gypsum at 150% GR consistently reduced exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) below 5% and produced the most favorable exchangeable Ca–Na balance. The combined treatment approached gypsum effectiveness, whereas CaCO₃ alone provided limited reclamation. H₂SO₄ caused the greatest pH reduction and was most effective in decreasing ESP and increasing exchangeable Ca²⁺ in the soil with the highest CaCO₃ content. Amendments affected inorganic P distribution more strongly than total sequentially extracted inorganic P. Gypsum increased Ca-bound and fixed P while decreasing relatively labile fractions, whereas H₂SO₄ produced the opposite response. Increased grain and straw yields, aboveground biomass, and harvest index coincided with reduced ESP and exchangeable Na⁺. Overall, gypsum provided the most consistent reclamation, while H₂SO₄ may be effective in highly calcareous sodic soils when rates account for carbonate buffering and acid-neutralization capacity.
